India is the largest democracy in the world with more than 800 million people eligible to vote out of a population of 1.3 billion but how successful is it? It has been marred by corruption and violence and its current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, is feared to favour Hindu extremists.
Dr Mukulika Banerjee is associate professor, director of the South Asia Centre at LSE and author of Why India Votes? which offers a fascinating account of the Indian electorate through a series of comprehensive ethnographic explorations conducted across the country.
Salil Tripathi has been a foreign correspondent in Singapore and a contributing editor to Indian publications. He now works at a human rights organisation in London and has been a visiting fellow for business and human rights at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
